Where Is
The Funk?
If you have never seen a FUNK, then you are in the
majority. Until a few years ago, I never came in contact with a Funk.
There was one was for sale in Kansas. I went to look at it and didn’t
buy it. The owner and I couldn’t come to an agreement on the price.
The Funk is a popular plane among those who know of it.
The Funk was the result of two brothers and their hobby. They
started by repairing Henry Ford’s Model Ts in their poultry store in
Akron, OH. The first flight of their Funk CG-2 glider was at the Akron
Municipal Airport in 1933. From there came the powered flight version
some years later.
For twenty years, there has been a newsletter
published call the Funk Flyer. The newsletter was a brainchild
of G. Dale Beach in 1974. It was a method of assisting Funk owners to
exchange ideas and information trying to locate parts. “The Funk
Aircraft Owners Association’s (FAOA) goal is the preservation,
restoration, flying and exhibition of one of the best and safest light
planes ever manufactured,” so says the FAOA Newsletter.
The 27th FAOA Reunion will be in
Coffeeville, KS on October 1-3.
If you would like to join the Funk group, contact
LaNell Brown, 1401 O’neal, Greenville, TX 75401 or email
faoanews@yahoo.com. Or you may go to their website at
www.funkflyers.org. The website is a bit outdated and unfinished,
but it does provide some information.
