August 6 - The New Mexico Pilots Assoc will present a free Federal
Aviation Administration aviation safety seminar for area pilots on
Saturday 19 August from 10 am to noon at the Mesa Airlines Pilot
Development Program facilities at the Farmington Four Corners Regional
Airport. The seminar is hosted by the Mesa Airlines Pilot Development
Program. This presentation is open to the public and it is free.
The presenter will be Bob Worthington, PhD, an instrument rated pilot,
an FAA Aviation Safety Counselor and a former aviation psychologist with
the US Army. This multi-media presentation is on Aviation Safety. The
90 minute presentation highlights what can go wrong when safety is
ignored. Several video clips clearly illustrate what can happen when
pilots and other aviation personnel don't observe safety rules in and
around aircraft such as what happens when a man does a test flight on
his new helicopter before being trained to fly helicopters or what
happens when a Naval
crewman gets too close to the jet intake of a Naval fighter just before
take-off from a carrier (he survived but after seeing the videotape one
wonders how).
The presentation was put together by the FAA Civil Aerospace Medical
Institute's Aerospace Medical Education Division. While this
presentation is designed for the General Aviation pilot it reveals
safety mistakes also made by airline and military pilots as well. It
also highlights how attention to safety and flight training can avoid
accidents such as in a TV news video of the flight crew landing an
airliner in southern California with the nose gear cocked at a right
angle to the runway. The safety seminar is very entertaining as well as
educational. It vividly shows the sometimes disastrous results of
becoming lax when flying airplanes and how attention to safety can avoid
having a bad day.
After the safety seminar the Mesa Pilot Development Program staff will
provide a Dutch treat catered lunch and after lunch all attendees are
invited to tour the Mesa Airlines Pilot Development Program training
facilities to visit the classrooms and flight simulators.
The New Mexico Pilots Association was founded in 1985 and is a not for
profit organization devoted to providing pilot safety education to NM
pilots and to represent NM pilots regarding aviation issues and
concerns. NMPA presents monthly aviation safety seminars around the
state and in September provides a weekend mountain flying course in
Santa Fe. More information on NMPA can be found on
www.nmpilots.com.
