NorthWest Arkansas Community College Summer Aviation Programs

June 6 - NorthWest Arkansas Community College announced today that a series of aviation related events will be presented for the public this summer, ranging from summer day-camps for young people, to a chance to ride in a WWII, P-51 Mustang.

Local members of Alpha Eta Rho, an aviation fraternity, are asking for a $10 donation to the NWACC Foundation Aviation Scholarship Fund. When the donation is made, the donor will receive a chance for each for a ride in a P-51 Mustang. The Mustang, called “The Gunfighter”, is piloted by retired Air Force General Reg Urschler.

Donations can be made through any Alpha Eta Rho member, at Drake Aviation at the Springdale Airport (479-751-5050), or through the NWACC Aviation Department (479-619-4159).

Immediately following the Air Fest in Fayetteville (June 21-25), the Week with Wings Aviation Summer Camp for 16, 17, & 18 year old students will be hosted by NWACC And Drake Aviation at their flight academy on the east side of the Springdale Airport. The camp will conclude with an actual cross-country flight with a Certified Flight Instructor and the student at the controls.  To enroll in this camp, contact Drake Aviation for the application & further details.

On July 12-16, students age 10-14, will have the opportunity to attend “Aviation Boot Camp”, at the Arkansas Air Museum, on the Fayetteville Airport. This camp will also culminate with an orientation flight. To participate, please contact the Arkansas Air Museum in Fayetteville (479-521-4947).

NWACC Aviation Director, Dave Bowman, said “We want to allow our young people to not only experience flight, but to start learning more about flight, through hands-on classroom activities, field trips, and learning first hand from experts in their fields.” Each camp will run from 8:00 AM till noon, and will feature classes on aviation history, how planes fly, aircraft systems and maintenance, flight operations, weather, and aviation careers. Tours will include airports, aircraft, museums, the Arkansas Aviation Technologies Center, and others.

NWACC Aviation offers four degree options for students pursuing a career in aviation as a pilot, maintenance specialist, or aviation business manager. For more information on summer activities, or any phase of aviation, please contact David Bowman at NWACC Aviation, at 479-619-4159 or dbowman@nwacc.edu .
