Putting together a 3-day event with the world’s only flying B-29 involves a good amount of serendipity. As Sep. 18 approaches, Great Bend Airfest 2015 has settled into a impressive display of warbirds, both static display and ride-sellers. Along with FIFI, Gunfighter, a premier CAF P-51, Miss Mitchell, their B-25, and the C-45 Expeditor, PT-23, A-26, and UC-78 will be selling rides. Bob Baker’s pair of P-51’s, flown by the twin Patillo brothers in World War II, John Swartz’s F-86, and Greg Colyer’s T-33 Acemaker will spend time in the pattern all three days. The AC-47 gunship Spooky will arrive for three days of tours.
Fly-ins for this event should plan to arrive for the pancake breakfast, and enter the free drawing for the 2:00 p.m. ride in Gunfighter on Saturday. That’s a great bucket-list value for a $1695 experience. A hangar dance with the Ladies for Liberty trio follows the POW/MIA ceremony that evening. $40 helicopter rides all three days make this a wonderful family event with concessions and vendors galore.
With a 7850’ runway lots of World War II ramp space, the former B-29 Army Airfield is paying tribute to its history, the warbirds who dominated European and Pacific theaters, and the men and women who served our country. www.greatbendairfest.com or email@example.com if you need information.
