TFR NOTIFICATION WARNING

As our air show season gets into full swing (see our air events calendar), the TFRs continue to POP UP all over.  We sent out a TFR NOTIFICATION E-MAIL last week to those who subscribe to our NOTAM warning.  It contained eighteen (18) solid and/or anticipated TFRs.  The President was going home to Texas with stops in surrounding states.

If you don’t receive our e-mail notification and would like too, just e-mail your request to notams@fly-low.com and we will add you to the list.  Being on the list will not guarantee that you will not fly into a TFR.  We only advise of the existing or anticipated TFRs, and only when we are aware of them.  We’re not perfect.  The only way to get up-to-date information is to call FSS.  Even then, you need to request all NOTAMs in your flight path to make sure the briefer doesn’t forget them.

If you haven’t been to our new and improved website, check it out.  It has a new look and new pages.  We now post the classified section, along with our usual pages.  As you check the events calendar page, see if your event is listed.  If it is not, e-mail the information to us.  In order to get it in the hard copy issue, I need it by the 15th of the preceding month of publication.

OTHER SITES USEFUL TO PILOTS

There is an FAA website that will allow pilots to receive information about events in your area.  Go to http://registry.faa.gov/amsvcs.asp and register.  That allows you access to pages within the website.  You will also receive e-mail notices about safety from the FAA.

Flying to AirVenture at Oshkosh requires some studies.  This is the 32 page NOTAM issued for your arrival and departure to the ‘Big One’.  Go to http://www.airventure.org/2004/flying/notam_2004.pdf

YELLOW JOURNALISM STINKS

In this issue, we have two separate sides to the general aviation dilemma.  One side is from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), it says that general aviation airports and aircraft pose no threat to the general public from terrorist.  On the other hand, my brothers in journalism over on the dark side are doing reports to get their ratings up about how unsafe general aviation airports are.  The “uninformed and uncaring” TV, radio, newspaper journalist are looking for BIG ratings.  They go out to unsuspecting FBO and interview them on the laxness of security.  It is easy to make a big deal about airports and no security.

I drove past the local Ryder and U-Haul truck rental today, only to find no security there, as well.  More people can drive a truck than can drive a plane.  I have yet to see a story about the dangers of a Ryder truck parked with fertilizer in from of a Federal Building.  Aviation is suffering from so many things, high fuel prices, September 11, expensive purchase and/or repair cost, and now we have the local news media blasting us because it will help their ratings.  Not because, aviation is a real threat to the world, but because of the dollar impact that a good story will bring them during sweeps week.

I believe it is time to cry, FOUL!!!  The smell of yellow journalism stinks.
